This is a rare and exceptional specimen. A preloved, hand-carved piece of Victorian Alpine history.  Crafted in the late 19th century, this 'Jagdstil' (hunting style) instrument features the two most sought-after motifs in Black Forest carving: the noble Roebuck Stag and the loyal Hunting Hound.

Unlike mass-produced modern replicas, the depth of the 'undercutting' in the oak leaves and the soulful expression in the animals' eyes speak to the skill of likely a master Swiss or German woodcarver.

In the world of antiques, perfection is often a sign of reproduction.  This piece wears its history openly.  Most notably there are hairline fractures in the original milk-glass thermometer plate.  This is not 'damage' in the modern sense but rather a 'stress cry' from the original wood as it seasoned and moved over the last 130 years.  It remains structurally sound and serves as an authenticating mark of its significant age.

This piece features a dual movement weather station. The upper thermometer is a rare triple scale display (Réaumur, Celsius and Fahrenheit)

Below is an open centred aneroid (mechanical) barometer, allowing you to see the intricate brass mechanical movement within. Still currently in working order.

The wood is hand-carved, likely from Linden wood, with a rich, dark original chocolate patina. There is a section on the right which has split at some point during its lengthy life, and an 'honest' period repair has been attempted by a previous owner and still remains intact.

In terms of provenance, this piece is hand-stamped on the reverse with a workshop production number No 4307.  It measures approx. 73.5cm x 33cm.

Overall, this piece continues to be magnificent; in excellent antique condition - the wood carving is crisp with no missing ears or antlers (rare for its age). The barometer dial shows a beautiful age-related mellowing.

A stunning, moody and magnificent piece for a library, hallway or gallery wall.
